There is still art being made in this modern life that doesn't necessarily fit into a genre, a time, or a place. Fundamentally, these are rock’n’roll songs imbued with a cutting, unvarnished honesty; “the title track is about when my wife and I both lost our jobs at the same time, starting over from scratch in our late 30’s, and trying to find the good in that situation. The rest are stuff about change and aging. Divorce, young love, Christian guilt.” The radio may want you to think that thoughtful and expansive lyrics don’t pair well with catchy hooks, but R.R. Williams most certainly doesn’t want you to think that. Not for a second. “I’d be equally happy if folks find something that speaks to them in the words, or a melody gets stuck in their head” he says. I’d say, the odds are equally on both.
