Communion in the Ashesis flat-out rock n’ roll, a rallying cry, a series of anthemic songs by M. Lockwood Porter and his five-piece band designed to build hope amongst the surrounding doom.  Yes, this about community and moving forward rather than wallowing in despair. It’s one of those roll-down-your-windows and let-the-wind-blow-back-your-hair records, full of hooks and jangling guitars. No doubt he owes both to Dylan and Springsteen, but this is not a new stance for him.  Social and political issues were the focus of his 2016 How to Dream Again.

Carrying on to Tulsa, OK for the new M.Lockwoord Porter album Communion in the Ashes that is coming out next week on the 29th of March on Black Mesa Records. This one is going to be a powerful americana / rock album that forces the listeners to think and hopefully inspires and encourages them to start working towards a brighter future. The title track delivers on Porter’s intended mission. A dire warning against climate change, the track crackles with urgency thanks both to Porter’s image-rich lyrics and an electric guitar-driven arrangement. Porter wrote the song while considering a move away from his adopted home in San Francisco and after wildfires ravaged the area in 2017.
